I'm Sam van der Plas!
When I was rejected from the film academy at seventeen for being too young, it didn’t crack my spirit for a second. Coming from a background where a life as a director was anything but guaranteed, I quickly understood how to work outside the system.
Being self-taught, I learnt wherever access was possible—practicing alone in my room, studying films and behind-the-scenes material on Youtube, rehearsing, filming, and refining my skills through trial, error, and endless repetition.
I soon after launched a job at the largest public network in the Netherlands, working as a self-directing cameraman. I treated every assignment as part of my education: experimenting with techniques, creating hybrids between fiction and non-fiction, and pouring my modest salary into new creative projects on the side.
The instinctive desire to make films has become the red thread through my life.
